Highlights

Italy's total producer price index rose 2.4 percent month-on-month in July and 7.8 percent year-on-year, driven overwhelmingly by energy prices, which jumped 7.9 percent on the month and 21.8 percent year-on-year in the total market.

Excluding energy, producer prices rose a more modest 0.3 percent month-on-month and 3.1 percent year-on-year, pointing to broader but far more contained price pressure across the rest of industry.

Among the main industrial groupings, consumer goods prices were roughly flat, down 0.1 percent on the month and up 1.0 percent year-on-year. Within that category, durable consumer goods fell 0.5 percent month-on-month but rose 4.9 percent year-on-year, while non-durable consumer goods edged up 0.1 percent on the month and were flat year-on-year.

Capital goods prices rose 0.5 percent month-on-month and 2.4 percent year-on-year. Intermediate goods rose 0.4 percent on the month and accelerated to 5.7 percent year-on-year, the second-strongest annual gain among the groupings after energy.

Breaking down the total market by destination, domestic market prices closely tracked the overall trend, with energy again the standout, up 7.9 percent month-on-month and 21.6 percent year-on-year, while prices excluding energy rose 0.3 percent monthly and 3.3 percent annually.

On non-domestic markets, price dynamics diverged sharply between the euro area and non-euro area. Euro-area export prices fell 0.9 percent month-on-month for energy despite a 2.1 percent annual gain, while non-euro area energy prices jumped 10.1 percent on the month and surged 35.9 percent year-on-year, reflecting far greater volatility outside the single currency bloc.
