Highlights

Retail sales contracted a seasonally adjusted 0.1 percent in June from the previous month, led by a 0.4 percent decline in the value of food products, while non-food sales rose 0.2 percent. Compared to June of last year, sales were up 3.1 percent.

The gain in year-on-year sales was helped by a 14.2 percent rise in the sales of electrical household appliances and audio-video equipment and a 12.6 percent increase for computers and telecommunications equipment. This shows consumers were willing to make expensive purchases during the month.

In fact, all major categories saw sales increases in June save for shoes, leather goods, and travel items which declined 1.2 percent from a year ago.

Online sales rose the most which might be explained by the heatwave in Europe as consumers opted to stay indoors. These rose by 26.7 percent compared to a year ago, compared to gains of 1.8 percent for large-scale distributors and a 1.3 percent increase at small-scale retailers.

On a volume basis, sales were also down a seasonally adjusted 0.1 percent in June from a month ago while they were up 1.9 percent year-on-year.
