Highlights
Germany’s manufacturing sector recorded a strong headline recovery in June 2026, with real new orders rising by 3.1 percent month-over-month and 6.8 percent annually. However, this improvement rests on relatively narrow foundations. Excluding large-scale orders, demand declined by 0.5 percent. Thus, exceptional contracts rather than broad industrial expansion largely drove growth.
Machinery, electronics and optical products provided the main momentum, supported by automotive orders. Conversely, the 41.7 percent fall in other transport equipment demonstrates considerable sectoral volatility. Demand was also uneven geographically as domestic orders increased by 7.8 percent and non-euro-area orders by 10.2 percent, whereas euro-area demand contracted by 14.0 percent.
The 6.4 percent rise in capital-goods orders may indicate future investment, although the 2.5 percent decline in intermediate goods suggests weaker activity across industrial supply chains. Furthermore, manufacturing turnover fell by 1.3 percent monthly and 0.4 percent annually. This gap between orders and realised sales implies that stronger demand has not yet translated into production and revenue.
In essence, the latest figures suggest cautious recovery due to reliance on large contracts, weakening confidence in its sustainability. These updates take the RPI to 19 and the RPI-P to 14, meaning that economic activities continue to outpace market expectations in Germany.
Market Consensus Before Announcement
Orders are expected up 0.8 percent on the month and 5.9 percent on year in June after rising 19 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively, in May.
Definition
Manufacturers orders are a leading indicator for industrial production. The figures are calculated every month by the Federal Statistical Office and represent the value of all orders for the delivery of self-made products confirmed by industrial enterprises with 50 or more employees in the respective reporting period. The results are broken down by both sector and region of origin (domestic and foreign split into euro area and non-euro area). Monthly volatility can be very high so moving averages give a much better guide to underlying trends.
Description
Manufacturers orders data are keenly awaited by analysts each month. The data present a detailed breakdown by various sectors and a reading of the pulse of a major sector of the economy. Like the PPI, manufacturing orders data exclude construction, which is the preferred Eurostat measure.
The manufacturers orders data rank among the most important early indicators for monitoring and analyzing German economic wellbeing. Because these data are available for both foreign and domestic orders they are a good indication of the relative strength of the domestic and export economies. The results are compiled each month in the form of value indexes to measure the nominal development of demand and in the form of volume indexes to illustrate the price-adjusted development of demand. Unlike in the U.S., orders data are not collected for all manufacturing classifications - but only those parts in which the make-to-order production plays a prominent role. Not included are, for example, mining, quarrying and the food industry.
