Highlights
German business sentiment strengthened considerably in August 2026, with the business climate index rising from 86.7 to 88.8 points. The improvement reflected greater satisfaction with current conditions, markedly stronger expectations and declining uncertainty. This broad-based recovery in confidence is particularly encouraging given the continued increase in energy prices.
Manufacturing recorded a notable improvement as firms anticipated higher production over the next three months. However, persistent dissatisfaction with order levels suggests that the industrial recovery remains vulnerable to weak demand. Sentiment also improved in services, supported by growing confidence among information technology providers, although transportation and logistics continued to struggle.
Trade provided another positive signal, especially wholesale activity, while retailers reported better current conditions and expectations. Construction firms became less pessimistic about the future, but their assessment of present conditions weakened slightly.
In summary, the findings indicate that Germany is moving gradually from stagnation towards recovery. Nevertheless, the improvement is presently stronger in expectations than in underlying activity. Weak industrial orders, difficult logistics conditions and construction pressures mean that the recovery remains tentative rather than firmly established. These updates take the RPI to 26 and the RPI-P to 27, meaning that economic activities are now outpacing market expectations in Germany.
Market Consensus Before Announcement
The consensus sees a slightly better showing for business climate at 87.1 in August from 86.6 in July.
Definition
Ifo is an acronym from Information and Forschung (research). Published by Munich's Ifo Institute, the Business Climate Index is closely watched as an early indicator of morale in German industry. In addition to overall gauge of sentiment, data are provided on its two components, current conditions and expectations. As a forward looking indicator, the latter is normally seen as the more important. Ifo surveys more than 9,000 enterprises in manufacturing, services, construction, wholesaling and retailing and a separate estimate of sector confidence is supplied for each.
Description
The headline index has a good correlation with developments in overall GDP and so has a major influence in shaping views on how the national economy is performing. The main focus is the expectations index.
