Highlights
Germany’s business climate improved in July 2026, with the index rising from 85.7 to 86.6 points. The increase was driven primarily by expectations, which climbed from 84.3 to 86.7, while the current situation index weakened from 87.0 to 86.5. This divergence suggests that businesses anticipate improving conditions, although present economic activity remains subdued.
Manufacturing recorded the strongest improvement as demand recovered and material shortages eased, potentially supporting future production. Confidence also strengthened across services, trade and construction. Tour operators became more optimistic, retailers expressed fewer concerns about future performance, and fewer construction firms reported insufficient orders.
Nevertheless, all sectoral balances remained negative, particularly in trade and construction. The findings therefore indicate an early and fragile recovery rather than a decisive expansion. Companies appear less pessimistic despite uncertainty surrounding the Persian Gulf, but weaker assessments of current performance show that improved sentiment has not yet translated into broad-based economic momentum.
Market Consensus Before Announcement
The consensus looks for the business climate index up slightly to 86.0 in July from 85.6 in June.
Definition
Ifo is an acronym from Information and Forschung (research). Published by Munich's Ifo Institute, the Business Climate Index is closely watched as an early indicator of morale in German industry. In addition to overall gauge of sentiment, data are provided on its two components, current conditions and expectations. As a forward looking indicator, the latter is normally seen as the more important. Ifo surveys more than 9,000 enterprises in manufacturing, services, construction, wholesaling and retailing and a separate estimate of sector confidence is supplied for each.
Description
The headline index has a good correlation with developments in overall GDP and so has a major influence in shaping views on how the national economy is performing. The main focus is the expectations index.
