Highlights

Stocks recovered to end narrowly mixed Friday as investors saw an early steep selloff as a buying opportunity but markets remained on edge. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.7 percent, and the S&P 500 eased 0.1 percent and the Nasdaq firmed 0.1 percent. US Treasury yields, the dollar and oil prices all rose.

Rising yields weighed on risk appetite as the market appears on edge about what delayed economic reports will show. The Labor Department said it would release the September employment report this coming Thursday, for a start, and Commerce Department will release the delayed international trade in goods and services report for August on Nov. 19. Uncertainty about how the data will affect the Federal Reserve rate outlook is a big overhang.
