Meanwhile, Hassett's comment that an end to the government shutdown was likely this week apparently convinced some investors, given positive reaction to it in equities and other risk assets. He suggested, without evidence, that Democrats were waiting to vote to reopen the government until after the weekend's nationwide No Kings protests against Trump. Hassett also threatened"stronger measures" from the Trump administration if the Democrats do not vote to reopen the government this week. He did not say what those measures might be but presumably he has in mind more layoffs of furloughed government workers and executive actions to cut what the president has termed"Democrat" federal agencies and to halt infrastructure projects in states run by Democrats. More actions along these lines would be distinctly deflationary and negative for risk assets.
