Introducing Options on Solana (SOL) and Micro SOL Futures

Options on Solana (SOL) and Micro SOL futures offer a regulated and transparent avenue for exposure to one of the world's leading digital assets, expanding the toolkit for market participants seeking to manage risk through flexible trading strategies. This is especially relevant as Solana’s market cap growth shows rising demand for advances trading and risk management solutions.

The minimum price fluctuation for these options is 0.05 per SOL, equivalent to $25 per contract, and they are quoted in U.S. dollars and cents per index point.

These options contracts offer a seamless transition and flexible portfolio management, as they are physically delivered into the underlying futures, which are financially settled, in contrast to unregulated options found on alternative platforms.

Additionally, options on SOL and Micro SOL futures provide a cost-effective method for market participants to enhance risk management and build more versatile portfolios.

Flexible exposure and execution

A variety of expiration dates and sizes are available, ranging from short-term Weekly options to smaller Micro contracts, providing the opportunity for carefully tailored exposure. The schedule for listings includes Weekly options on weekdays, as well as monthly and quarterly contracts, granting market participants the ability to efficiently handle their positions.

Trading example

Assume that on the final trade date, the financially settled price for the Micro SOL futures contract prints at $150. A monthly call option struck at $140 will also expire on the same day. Because it expires in-the-money, the call will be exercised. The profit would be $10 per SOL.

Subtracting a $0.10 premium, the net profit is $9.90 per SOL, resulting in a total gain of $247.50.

In contrast, someone holding a $160 strike call option would find their position expires out-of-the-money. The option would expire worthless, and the loss would be limited to the premium paid, or a total loss of $1.25.

Trading hours and conclusion

Options on SOL and Micro SOL futures are available on Globex, our electronic trading platform, or via block trades. Globex operates from Sunday to Friday, 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, with a 60-minute break each day. ClearPort is also available for trading, with hours from Sunday 5:00 p.m. to Friday 5:45 p.m. CT.
