Trade Year Round, with Coverage If a Second Major Hurricane Strikes
Following a successful 2008 season, where our total coverage traded was $400 million, CME Group has made several improvements based on customer feedback to our hurricane futures and options on futures contracts.
- We have extended Hurricane futures and options trading to encompass the entire year, from January 1 to December 31. This enables customers to begin looking at their risk associated with the coming hurricane season early in the year, and also helps them net positions and manage risk in case of a late season hurricane event.
- We have also added a new family of Second Seasonal Maximum Binary Contracts, using the CHI, which launched on Monday, January 12, 2009. This product acts as a second event cover, in situations where a second major hurricane occurs, and coverage was wiped out by the first major hurricane. The Second Seasonal Maximum contract complements the current hurricane Event Seasonal Maximum Binary contracts.
We will use Eqecat as the final settlement mechanism for all hurricane contracts.
