About uranium
Uranium is a hard and dense silvery gray metal that is also mildly radioactive. It occurs naturally in low concentrations (a few parts per million) in soil, rock and water.

In the civilian sector, uranium is used primarily to fuel commercial nuclear power plants. It is also used for a wide range of military purposes, and to a lesser extent is used in textiles, photography, and chemistry and physics labs. Uranium was present during the formation of the earth, and because it has an extremely long half life (4.47 billion years for 238U), scientists used to date the earth with a high degree of accuracy.
