Copper Futures: New Records for Trading Volume

With average volume of more than 50,000 contracts traded per day, the COMEX Copper futures contract is one of most liquid trading instruments in the world. February of this year saw Copper futures trading activity on COMEX hit new records for trading volume. The flagship 25,000-lb Copper futures contract set a new volume record on April 10 with 127,276 contracts traded, besting the previous high of 109,426 contracts traded on February 9. The increased market activity has resulted in the average daily volume for our Copper futures contract edging higher to approach the 80,000 level. The record volumes were set in the backdrop of an improved macroeconomic outlook in the U.S. and Asia and concerns about eurozone debt dissipating --- conditions that have supported a recovery in copper prices.
Copper futures are hedging tools that offer price mitigation opportunities to a range of copper market participants. They also provide global price discovery and opportunities for portfolio diversification.
