Wheat futures provide a way to:

  • Participate in global price discovery for wheat
  • Effectively manage the price risk that wheat merchandisers, producers, food processors, livestock operations, importers and others have related to the purchase or sale of wheat
  • Take advantage of arbitrage and spread opportunities with other commodities including related grains, oilseeds and livestock
  • Evaluate or reflect on both the current and future supply and demand situation for wheat
  • Identify short and long-term cyclical price and volatility patterns for wheat
  • Trade to hedge or speculate based on expectations of directional price, spread movement or volatility in wheat

Things to Know:

  • Wheat futures are a dollar denominated physical delivery 5,000 bushel (approx. 136 metric tons) contract
  • Contracts are available for trading over 15 hours per day providing customers access regardless of their time zone
  • Wheat futures are traded electronically on CME Globex during the Asian and European daytime market hours as well as during the primary U.S. grain trading hours side-by-side with the trading floor
  • Wheat is used to produce flour, the key ingredient for breads, pasta, crackers and many other food products, as well as several industrial products such as starches and adhesives
  • Wheat by-products are used in livestock feeds
