2016 Palm Suite Performance Highlights

  • The group of 6 products ended 2016 setting new records in both Volume and Open Interest (OI).
  • Year end OI expanded to 26,938 contracts, up +179% Y-on-Y.
  • Q4 volume hit a new quarterly record at 35,704 contracts, growing by +44% from the previous quarter.
  • Overall, 2016 volume closed at a record 120,580 contracts, representing 3 million tons of palm oil changing hands in 2016 at the CME. In 2015 volume stood at 52,372 contracts, representing an annual growth rate of +130% Y-on-Y.
  • OI continues to migrate from CPC (swap) to CPO (futures), with the market share of the futures growing from 4.8% of OI in Q3 to 6.9% in Q4. To further drive futurization, from 5 Feb 2017, comingling of margins between the swaps and the futures will be permitted.
  • Since launch, over 230,000 contracts (representing 5.7 million metric tons) have cleared.
  • 2016 volumes cleared at the CME now represent approximately 17% of annual Malaysian CPO production.
  • OI is extended out till Mar 2018. Contracts are now available out till calendar 2021.
