ADV and Open Interest Trends

  • Equity Index futures and options volume averaged 2.6 million contracts per day in April 2017, down 4% from April 2016.
  • Equity Index open interest averaged 8.9 million contracts per day for the month of April, and finished the month with 8.5 million contracts outstanding. 

BTIC on Major Indices

  • BTIC links futures to the cash market close and has been a very positive addition thus far, with over 2.3 million contracts traded ($251B notional) since the November 2015 launch. April was another strong month with ~11,000 contracts traded per day. We are continuing to see growth in BTIC in comparison to the cash market on close. In April, BTIC notional volume represented 14.7% of the MOC value traded at NYSE and Nasdaq, the highest percentage for a month since inception.

Product Highlights

  • S&P 500 Options: ADV for April was 692,206 contracts per day, representing a 27% increase vs. April 2016. CME Group launched Monday Weekly S&P 500 Options (E-mini and Standard) on April 3 which have had a very successful first month – over 500,000 contracts have traded since launch. Monday options help customers position themselves for weekend headlines and events, such as the French elections or a potential US government shutdown, and have been supported by CME Group major customers.
  • S&P Select Sector Futures: In April, the E-mini S&P Select Sector Index futures achieved over 3,700 ADV which represents a 60% increase over April 2016. Specifically, the Utilities Sector averaged 808 contracts in April which represents a 108% increase over April 2016.
