Mid-Session Stock Index Market Report

US equity markets exploded in the wake of this morning's January Non-Farm Payroll data that showed the largest number of jobs added since April 2011. Some traders were also encouraged by the fall in the unemployment rate, which came in at 8.3% and to the lowest level in nearly 3 years. This helped the March S&P 500 rally to its highest level since July 7th and pushed the Dow Jones cash index toward a new 5-year high. Financial-related shares were among the best performers of the session up more than 2%. Consumer discretionary stocks also benefited from the positive jobs data and prospects that the US economy was further entrenched on the recovery track. Trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange was running about 11% above its 30 day average. Market breadth was positive, with advancers outpacing decliners by nearly 5 to 1. The CBOE Volatility Index plunged more than 6.5% to its lowest level since July 8th.
