Mother Nature Still the Determining Factor

As Midwest weather turned warmer and dryer following a cold, soggy April, the Agriculture Department reported 43% of the U.S. corn crop was planted last week, tying a weekly progress record, in percentage terms, set in 1992.

However, the USDA's weekly Crop Progress figures may not tell the full story, calling into question the assumptions over the role of bigger, more technologically-advanced farm equipment, according to University of Illinois economists Scott Irwin and Darrel Good wrote this week on the farmdocDaily agricultural news site.
