The Managing Director of Strategic Planning will be responsible for research, development, articulation, implementation and communication of the long term corporate strategy. The position will interact heavily with the Management Team, the Strategic Steering Committee, and the Board of Directors on all issues related to corporate strategy. He/she will also be responsible for the oversight of the annual business planning process, working with the regional leads, P&S product heads, key members of the MT, the Finance Division, and Strategic Planning department resources.
Functions:
Research and articulate any necessary changes to the CME Group Strategic Plan. Bring these forward to the Management Team and OCEO for discussion and approval.
Based on research and analysis proactively identify strategic alternatives that can create growth/value for the company. Drive and own these alternatives through the approval of Management Team and Board of Directors.
Direct the annual business planning process (begun in 2008 with 4th Floor Consulting). Provide staffing to assure timely completion of revised 3 year plans and periodic reporting on progress. Works with P&S product heads, Research & Product Development department, key members of the MT, and the Finance Division in this process.
Serve as the primary management liaison to the Strategic Steering Committee. Responsible for preparation and approval of agendas, advance review of presentation materials, coordination of meetings and agendas with OCEO and where appropriate, Board officers or Executive Committee.
Direct the annual Board of Directors Strategic Planning Offsite. Prepare agenda with OCEO, oversee development of pre-reading materials, presentations for the agenda, identify and engage one or more keynote speakers, oversee coordination of all logistics for the event.
Identify, research and provide context and analysis about all strategic issues and changes in the strategic business environment of CME Group. Coordinate the gathering and analyzing of data, working proactively with cross-functional teams throughout the enterprise. Prepare a framework to evaluate potential responses to critical changes in the environment, solicit feedback, create presentations and reports for the Management Team, OCEO, and as directed for the Strategic Steering Committee and Board of Directors.
Manage the Strategic Planning department, recruiting, developing and retaining staff. Assist the senior management of the Corporate Development division on all matters of mutual interest; provide strategic guidance to the Business Development and Research & Product Development departments in particular.
Participate in financial services industry and general strategic planning functions; engage consulting resources as required.
Be prepared to support the activities of the Investor Relations department in articulating CME Group’s strategic direction to our shareholders, buy-side and sell-side analysts, and other key constituents as required.
Tie key tenets of the corporate strategy to operational performance measures to support ongoing decision-making and defined accountability among key executives and managers.
Requirements
A graduate degree (MBA, MM, PhD) in business with 10+ years of business experience including 5+ years of post graduate business school experience in the financial services sector.
Previous strategic analysis/strategic planning experience required; knowledge of derivatives and/or securities markets a major advantage.
Strong analytic, presentation and communication skills with a good commercial orientation.
